Held each year in Nelson in the South Island of New Zealand, the workshops are modelled on the Irish Summer Schools held in Miltown Malbay, Tubbercurry and Drumshambo. The workshops offer a series of master class and performance opportunities to attendees to enhance their own music practice as well as the cultural and artistic landscape of New Zealand with its strong Irish links.
Commencing in 2000 as a master class for flute players organised by the Celtic Flute School of New Zealand, the workshops evolved so that by 2003 classes had been added for fiddle, concertina and bouzouki. In 2004, we added more classes so that we offered flute, fiddle, uilleann pipes, whistle and accompaniment workshops primarily for guitarists and bouzouki players. At that time, we changed the name of the event to Ceol Aneas which is Gaelic for Music from the South. In case you're not sure, it's pronounced something like 'kee-ole ann-ass'.
In previous years we've had John Carty, June MacCormack, Michael Rooney, Mikie Smyth, Sean Smyth, Cillian Vallely, Kevin Crawford, Donogh Henessey, Trevor Hutchinson and Hammy Hamilton as our guests and tutors. Take a look at the History section for pictures of previous events.
